And another thing….

…about American Idol, while it’s on my mind.

It’s time for new judges, folks. I’m not advocating a clean slate, just a 2/3 clean one. It baffles me that the producers haven’t gotten rid of them yet because in all honesty, and everyone knows this, Randy and Paula are pretty much useless. Even though not one of the the three has their pulse on current music (Il Divo anyone?) at least Simon’s vitriolic commentary has earned him a moderately respected opinion. The other two however, haven’t had an interesting thing to say or do for 7 seasons.

Randy: Recycles less than 10 lines over and over in efforts to describe his emotions after a performance – none of which are remotely enlightening: “I didn’t get it.” “I’m not feeling it, dog.” “There were some pitch problems.” “Not good, not good.” “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” “Lovin’ it dog.”

Paula: Though admittedly interesting when she’s intoxicated has only a a slightly larger vocabulary than Randy but somehow manages to say even less.

So my suggestion is to fire their tails and bring in two new, younger judges. Bring in some young producer to replace Randy – maybe someone in the same vein as Pharrell – someone who actually makes and listens to the kind of music they might want to sell. And then bring in a singer-songwriter female to replace Paula. I realize that obviously anyone they get will be at least a little bit in the “washed-up” category but I’m thinking someone in the spirit of Sarah McLachlan or Jewel or Alanis Morissette, even (as long as we don’t have to hear her sing *shudder*) Natalie Merchant would fit the bill. They just really need someone with a bit of edge who’ll be sympathetic, but opinionated enough to hold the audience’s interest. For some reason, even though she’s probably Paula’s age, I think Linda Perry might be an interesting choice. She’s got the edge the show desperately needs and she acutally produces music that, despite being debatable quality-wise, makes money and gets played on the radio.

So what do you think? Am I right or am I right? Next year people. It’ll be a little tough at first and I’m sure it will take some getting used to, but I think if producers really want the show to continue to be successful and interesting they need to mix up that table a whole lot.

eeehh you are so wrong. the judges make this show what it is (nr 1)! simon +paula+ randy together. and randy and paula useless? i dont think so haha. some of the most successful idols were discovered by them, and not simon. for example kelly clarkson.

haha I would quit watching this show right away if they ever replaced Paula (which of course, they wont. she will stick around as long as she wants to! and if she ever decides to leave, it would kill the media’s interest in the show, because the media is almost only interested in her) . I dont care about randy, but Paula ROCKS. idol is the Simon and Paula show, always has been, always will be.
