SNL Hosts

SNL is a re-run tonight (it’s summer) and Matthew Fox was the host. I was thinking about how so many dramatic actors make terrible comedians. Fox is mildly amusing, but not really funny…he, like a lot of dramatic actors doing comedy, always seems to be acting. Comedic actors on the other hand can be amazing in drama and I usually enjoy them better in that genre: Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Jim Carey, Bruce Willis, Steve Martin, Gene Wilder, Bill Murray, Will Smith (okay that one’s a bit of a stretch, but he was nominated for an oscar), Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler (I still can’t bring myself to truly like him because of his retard comedy, but I’m getting there…), Toni Collette, Owen Wilson….the list goes on. I think it’s because really good comedy has an element of pathos – the reality of life and death under the surface.

So generally most hosts who have no comedic background are pretty terrible on SNL. You can tell they’re just kind of being dragged along through every sketch. Very few are great. Anyway, here’s my short list of favorite non-comedian guest hosts from the past few years:

  • Alec Baldwin – As much as I hate to admit it, he’s great on SNL.
  • Christopher Walken
  • Gwyneth Paltrow
  • Justin Timberlake – He’s been surprisingly and consistently hilarious
